Topic:Family-Based Treatment for Anorexia Nervosa in Children & Adolescents

Eating disorders are serious, life-threatening conditions that typically onset during adolescence. All eating disorders, but anorexia nervosa in particular, can have devastating effects on a young person’s physical, psychological and emotional development if left untreated. Fortunately, children and adolescents have a significant chance at recovering from these illnesses, provided that immediate and intensive treatment is applied. Family-Based Treatment (FBT), also known as the “Maudsley Method,” offers an evidence-based intensive therapy model that can be administered at the outpatient level of care. FBT has garnered a significant amount of scientific support and has demonstrated its effectiveness at bringing about both physical and psychological health restoration in youth suffering from eating disorders. The purpose of this presentation is to a) provide a comprehensive overview of FBT and b) assist attendees to identify resources for accessing evidence-based care for youth with eating disorders.
