Presentation: “An Introduction to Working with LGBTQ Clients”

Speaker: Dr. Bruce Menapace, PhD

 

 

Dr. Bruce Menapace is a psychologist and outreach coordinator at the Cleveland State University Counseling Center and has worked there since he earned his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in 1997 from the California School of Professional Psychology. For over two decades, he has worked with college students helping many LGBTQ individuals come to a more positive self-acceptance. At CSU he started and currently facilitates both the “LGBTQ+ Student Support Hour” and the “Trans Student Support” group. He has written numerous referral letters for transgender students. He is one of the founders of the LGBT SafeSpace Program both at CSU and Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) and has presented regarding LGBT Safe Space, healthy relationships, sexuality, sexual orientation and gender identity. His consultation work led to “gender identity” and “gender expression” being included in the non-discrimination statements of both CSU and NEOMED. He has served on the Board of Directors for Black and White Men Together – Cleveland, People of All Colors Together – Cleveland and the National Association of Black and White Men Together (NABWMT). In 2016, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by NABWMT for 25 years of combating racism and homophobia and mentoring LGBT students. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of It’s About Us, a non-profit organization that advocates for the aging LGBTQ community in Northeast Ohio.

 

An Introduction to Working with LGBTQ Clients

In this two-hour workshop, participants will gain an introductory understanding of issues pertinent to working with clients (18 years of age and older) who are Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender or Questioning. Current professional guidelines for working with clients from these populations will be discussed, including counseling and referral for gender confirmation surgery. Participants will learn about relative vocabulary and local resources. How to help with commonplace clinical concerns for LGBTQ clients will also be discussed.

2.0 MCE credits for Ethics/Diversity will be provided from the OPA-MCE. The Cleveland Psychological Association, Inc. is approved by the Ohio Psychological Association, Inc., #06P0-341377843, maintains responsibility for the program.
